We follow the Austroads Guide to Road Safety Part 6, which sets out the stages so risk gets caught when it's cheapest to fix. We match the depth of review to the maturity of the design and pick up existing roads and work-zone traffic management too.

When is a road safety audit required in Victoria?
Audits are routine on DTP works and often come in as a planning permit condition for traffic-generating developments. They're also expected on Big Build packages like the Level Crossing Removal Program.
Who actually does the audit?
An accredited road safety auditor working independently of the design team. That separation is what DTP and councils require for the audit to count.
How is this different from a compliance check?
A compliance check confirms the design meets the standards. An audit asks how the road could still contribute to a serious crash, even when it's fully compliant.
How much does a road safety audit cost?
It depends on the stage, the size of the design package and whether a site inspection is needed, so there's no flat rate. A detailed design audit of a single intersection is a much smaller job than a pre-opening audit of a freeway upgrade with a night visit. Send us the drawings and scope and we'll quote it properly.
At what design stages can a road safety audit be done?
Any of the stages in Austroads Part 6: feasibility, preliminary design, detailed design and pre-opening, plus existing roads and active work zones. The earlier the audit, the cheaper the findings are to fix. A geometry problem caught at preliminary design is a line on a drawing; caught at pre-opening, it's rework.
What happens after the audit report is issued?
The findings go back to the designer and project manager, who respond to each one in the response table, either accepting it and nominating a fix or rejecting it with reasons. The auditor doesn't redesign the job; independence has to hold through close-out. We're available for a close-out meeting to talk the findings through.
